Instrument Making Project
Due Date: Music Class, May 11, 2020
Students will be assigned a specific instrument family and must make an instrument that belongs to that family.
You have learned that all sound is created by vibration. The vibration creates sound waves. In almost all musical instruments there are more than one vibration systems. For instance, in a string instrument the string vibrates and the sounding board vibrates. In a clarinet a reed vibrates and a column of air vibrates.
Your project is to create your own musical instrument using “found objects” in your home or garage. You don’t have to spend money to do this project. The recycle bin is a good place to find materials as is the “junk drawer” and the garage. Be sure to ask a parent about using any materials and wash items well.
A parent or adult should help with sharp or electric tools, but you, the student, must do the majority of the project. So, pick a project that is realistic for you to be able to do mostly by yourself.
Be creative when making your instrument. It is very simple to take a coffee can and pencil and say you have a drum. But you should go beyond that and decorate the can or add something to the drum to make it rattle when you play it. Use your imagination! Add personality to your instrument with decoration.
You can bring your instrument to school when you have it completed. Instruments are due on or before May 11th. You will need to present your instrument the week of May 11th. See the rubric to know what should be included in your presentation.
